Viva Camp Day 1: Workshops!

On 22nd June, Saturday, we had our annual Viva Camp, and we had an amazing time with not one, not two, but SIX superduperawesomepossum instructors who came down to conduct workshops for the day!

Also, this year, we had the pleasure of having SMU's Ardiente, as well as the NUS Ballroom team come down as well. (:

For the day, we had:

BBOYING: Bboys from BreakiNUS
BACHATA: Elliot Wong from Mosaic Dance
HIPHOP: Tan Yi-Fan from AnJ Danceworld, resident choreographer for NUS KeVII Hall
CONDITIONING/FOUNDATION: Peter Teo Freelance instructor
BALLET: Chen Wei from Singapore Dance Theatre
CONTEMP: Chua Yun Chun from Recognize Studios

Before dancing, we had combined warmups led by Viva's captain Huyang

And of course, a round of getting to know each other!

First up was BBoying with NUS Breakinus! Breakinus's Captain Ivan briefing the dancers before we get started!

The dancers trying very to copy what Ivan is doing

Will they succeed?

Let's find out in the videos!!!

GOOD JOB EVERYONE! Group picture with the awesome bboys! (:

Next up was the sensual Bachata workshop conducted by Elliot. For all these ballroom Latin dancers, it was a good chance to find out more about street Latin, and also to learn to dance Latin socially instead of to a fixed choreography. Of course, it was good for the SMU/NUS dancers to make friends! (: or maybe more than friends....? hahaha

After teaching them a short sequence, Elliot decided that it was time to evoke the romantic mood of Bachata, and dimmed the lights to recreate Bachata social dancing right here in our studio (:

We had fun! (:

After Bachata, we had a total switch in mood and learnt some hip hop from the super professional Yi Fan! Much of the time we were wondering how anyone can dance like that @.@

Sigh if only we were able to move our body like that

Here are the girls strutting their stuff

and here the guys getting groovy

and here's how they measure up to hiphop master Yi Fan!

Group pictureeee!

After that hip hop was Peter's torture, uh i mean, training session!

In pain? KEEP SMILING :D

Stretching is good for you

We can do it!!!

Thank you Peter for all your advice on dance technique!

After dinner, we were very privileged to have Mr Chen Wei from the Singapore Dance Theatre come down to give us a ballet workshop!

He spent much time focusing on the basics, and his attention to detail and discipline was very impressive. Definitely something for all of us to apply even in Latin Dancing.

Barre work, learning posture and the basic ballet positions.

To round off the day of intensive dancing, we had the lovely and bubbly Chun teach us some contemporary dancing. It was certainly a sharp contrast to the discipline of ballet, contemporary dancing allowed us to explore spaces, movement and our bodies in motion.

Having fun with space!

and being small

Thank you Chun!

and that concluded our day of workshops! (:

We had heaps of fun (: Catch you again soon!

Love,
Viva
